KAKENHI: Important Notes

1. Participation in the training on the prevention of misuse of research funds

To apply for KAKENHI (grant-in-aid for JSPS Fellows), you must first participate in the faculty and administrative staff training on the prevention of misuse of research funds.
Participation in the training is mandatory for all individuals applying for KAKENHI.


2. Preparation and submission of the research proposal
(Late January to early February, after the informal decision to grant the funding is made)

 KAKENHI has a set of restrictions on its use. Please read the application guidelines carefully and discuss your research plan with your host researcher before making your application.


3. The informal decision to grant the funding, and preparation and submission of the grant application(Usually around late April)

*The informal decision is expected to be made after April 1. Please keep in mind thatyou cannot start spending your KAKENHI until the informal decision is maderegardless of whether you need to make purchases before this date. You will not be reimbursed for expenses spent before the informal decision.

In the second year, you can start spending your KAKENHI at April 1.

4. Conducting research using KAKENHI

Please strictly observe the rules for spending KAKENHI.
Please seek advice from your host researcher, colleagues, or lab secretary regarding the procedures for using KAKENHI.


5. Carrying over the remaining balance of KAKENHI to the next fiscal year
(Mid-December to late February)

If it becomes apparent that you cannot spend the full amount of your KAKENHI within the current fiscal year due to unavoidable reasons, you can make a request to carry over the remaining balance of your KAKENHI to the following fiscal year.

6.Research report

Upon completion of your research and at the end of each fiscal year (if your carryover request is approved), you must submit a research report using a prescribed form.
